Differences In Sushi Restaurants From US To Japan

While it is common knowledge that sushi derives from Japan, sushi has taken on a new life in the United States and the version available in the United States is quite different from sushi served in a sushi restaurant in Japan. In the United States, while both Sushi and Sashimi is available, sushi rolls are of increasing popularity. Sushi rolls often contain numerous ingredients on top of the raw fish and rice, including but not limited to cucumbers, seaweed, avocado, peanuts, celery, carrots, amongst other varieties of vegetables and toppings. In addition, a variety of sauces are often used as dips for sushi including spicy mayo, teriyaki sauce, and combinations of soy sauce and wasabi.

In Japan, sushi options are much different. A sushi restaurant often only serves sashimi (piece of raw fish, no rice or other compliments) or sushi on rice with a thin layer of wasabi in between. Sushi is generally not pared with vegetables, though it is sometimes used with a thin layer of seaweed on it. While sauces are generally not used, and despite the Japanese love for mayo, it is not served with Sushi, soy sauce is typically used as a compliment for sushi.

Sushi is even served in different styles of restaurants in Japan. Conveyor belt sushi is quite popular, with converyor belts bringing sushi around restaurants and patrons being able to take plates off the belt which they are interest in.
